In this spatial work, one can experience the rotation of the Earth as an optical experience. In the upper section are 207 narrow windows of the same width as the sun’s apparent diameter, each fitted with a panel of glass of a different color. Sunlight filters through this colored glass and fills the interior with colored light, and the narrowly divided slits transform the rotation of the Earth into illuminated images that change in color and form every two minutes. Visitors enter and sit on benches to view the work. The title comes from the speed of the Earth’s rotation at the latitude of the exhibition venue. Speed is a physical quantity defined by the two dimensions that make up the universe: space and time. By shifting the axis from humans to planets, I wanted the audience to think about time that flows constantly in this world we inhabit, and our relationship to distant stars. <D.W>
この作品は地球が回っていることを、光の体験として感じられる空間作品です。上部には、207 枚の太陽の視直径と同じ幅の細い窓があり、それぞれ違う色のガラスが嵌められています。太陽の光は鮮やかな色ガラスを透かして部屋を染め、細かく分割されたスリットは地球の自転を2分毎に色と形が変化する光の像へと変換します。鑑賞者は中に入り、ベンチに座り鑑賞します。タイトルは展示場所の緯度における自転速度から付けられました。速度は空間と時間という宇宙を構成する二つの次元によって定義される物理量です。軸を人ではなく惑星においてみることで、私達の暮らすこの世界に、常に流れている時間や、遠い星との関係に、想いを馳せて頂けたらと思います。
